Final Flourish for Brecon Juniors
A trio of junior teams from Brecon RFC will be hoping to crown their performances by bringing their own version of the Triple Crown back home to Brecon.
The under 10, Under 13 and under 15 teams have all made their way to the final of their Heart of Wales Regional Cup competition. The Heart of Wales Section is part of the Blues Regional set up and encompasses teams from as far north as Builth and then down through the Taff and Cynon Valleys to just north of Pontypridd. Throughout the season teams have battled through the early round of the competition to reach goal of a place in the final.
It would be unfair to say that it is a surprise to see three Brecon teams in the finals to be held at Merthyr over Saturday and Sunday, 10th and 11th May. The teams have all played well with some notable successes throughout the year, however, it is the first time that Brecon has featured so prominently on the final weekend.
The under 10’s will be the first to try to lift a trophy as they take on Merthyr, the host team at noon on Saturday. The team has been outstanding over the past two seasons and they come into the final in good form having only recently won their own Brecon Mini Rugby Tournament and narrowly lost in the final of the Old Luctonians Festival.
On Sunday the reins are handed over to the under 13 and 15’s. The under 13’s who play Aberdare at 11 am also come into their final on the back of a successful tournament. Having travelled to Pembroke they were also losing finalists after pushing a strong Young Munster side to the limit.
The under 15 team will ring down the curtain on Brecon’s involvement in the finals with their match against Merthyr, kicking off at 1:45pm. The rivalry between these two teams has been intense all season with Merthyr slightly having had the upper hand in their contests so far. However, Brecon have been growing steadily in confidence and quality of performance of late and undoubtedly the match will be a closely fought affair.
Whatever the outcome of the weekend these local youngsters have already achieved a great deal but it goes without saying that their aim, at this stage, is to come home victorious from all three finals.
Brecon RFC mini/junior section has enjoyed a highly successful season. Individual players have represented the Club, Heart of Wales, Blues and even Wales. For any aspiring young player the pinnacle of success is representing ones country and that accolade was awarded to Lewis Smout at under 16 Level. He was selected to represent Wales in the Four Nations Tournament (France, England, Italy and Wales) held recently in France. The Welsh team emerged as Grand Slam winners emulating their senior counterparts and ensuring that the name of Wales featured on the 2008 list of sporting successes.
